Mold… How To?

Keep in mind that the words you are about to read are not intended as direct recommendations. They are here to help you make informed decisions.

Mold is insidious. It is also, unfortunately, a necessary evil in many environments. Mold typically exists when three things are present: a food source, the right climate, and excess moisture. Because of that, mold prevention and remediation depend on eliminating one or more of these conditions.

The easiest factor to control is usually moisture. If moisture cannot be reduced or controlled, mold spores will continue to grow and spread. Once the other contributing factors are managed, removing mold becomes much more achievable.

So how do you get rid of mold?

  1. Remove all possible sources of moisture.
  2. Encapsulate the mold where necessary.
  3. Remove mold and any remaining residue properly.
  4. Remove affected materials through permanent remediation when required.
  5. Prevent regrowth by treating the affected area.
  6. Rebuild and continue preventative treatment measures.

Simple enough, right? Here is the challenge. What kind of mold are you dealing with?

Health Canada has provided excellent information on mold identification and remediation, and professional guidance should always be considered. Mold can appear in many colours, exist both on and beneath surfaces, and vary significantly in severity. There is rarely a one size fits all solution.

Industrial hygienists and remediation professionals can often identify mold quickly and provide reliable advice at a reasonable cost. We are always happy to recommend trusted professionals.

Most importantly, our advice is this: talk to professionals. Mold can lead to serious long term health concerns, and it is not something to underestimate.

If you decide to move forward on your own, we are here to help guide you in the right direction.
