How Do Bug Sprays and Traps Work?

Keep in mind, I am simply sharing the basics here. Insecticides are created for a purpose. We all know that many insects carry pathogens, contaminate surfaces, or create other unwanted problems. That is why we work to keep them under control.

Some people may not love hearing this, but most insecticides use active ingredients that target insects in very specific ways. Many work by disrupting an insect's nervous system, allowing them to act more quickly and effectively than traditional poisons while using very small amounts of active ingredient.

The answer is simple. There are many different types of insects, and not every product works equally well for every pest. That said, the majority of common household and commercial insects can often be controlled with just a few well chosen products.

Flying insects usually require direct contact with an insecticide or an effective trapping system. That is why passive control methods, such as fly lights, work so well. They attract flying insects and trap them before they become a nuisance.

Spray insecticides also help discourage insects from entering treated areas, while metered spray units provide ongoing protection in locations where flying insects are a recurring problem.

Residual insecticides provide longer lasting protection, sometimes for up to 60 days, depending on the product and the conditions. They work much like contact insecticides but remain active on treated surfaces for an extended period. For best results, they are commonly applied around room perimeters and approximately 16 inches up door frames and other entry points where insects are most likely to travel.

Whenever you use an insecticide, always read and follow the product label. Keep pets and people away from treated areas for the recommended period of time, which is often between 6 and 8 hours, depending on the product.

Some pests, such as bed bugs and cockroaches, often require residual insecticides because their life cycles can allow them to survive treatments that provide only short term control.
